No. 91 NAI DFA 105/46

Letter from Charles Bewley to Joseph P. Walshe (Dublin)
(43/33)

Berlin, 28 September 19371

Having regard to the fact that the new Constitution will shortly come into effect, I shall be glad if you will ask the Minister for instructions on the following points.

  1. Should I communicate officially to the Foreign Office the official alteration of the name of the state from Saorstát Éireann to Éire?
  2. What further explanations should be given as to the effect of the Constitution on the relations of Éire to Great Britain?
  3. In the event of questions being put to me on the general relations of Éire to Great Britain, what general line should be taken?
  4. In the event of inquiries as to Éire's probable position in the case of a war between Germany and Great Britain, what should be the attitude adopted?

[signed] C. Bewley
