No. 75  NAI DFA Secretary's Files P70

Telegram from Eamon de Valera to Archbishop Daniel Mannix (Melbourne)

DUBLIN, 24 May 1941

It appears to be Britain's intention to impose conscription on the Six Counties. Such a measure would seriously jeopardize the friendly relations and sympathy which have grown up in recent years between the two countries. Every effort should be made to dissuade the British Government from pursuing such a fatal policy. The Cardinal has repeated the statement made by the Northern Bishops two years ago and expressed his conviction that any attempt to impose conscription would bring disaster.

I shall be very grateful for anything Your Grace can do.
