No. 279 UCDA P194/550
Dublin, 25 February 1939
The Minister, accompanied by myself and Captain Brennan1, will leave Dublin on Tuesday, the 7th March, for Rome. He will spend Wednesday night in Paris, and will leave there by the evening train on Thursday, arriving in Rome on Friday evening. We are presuming that the crowning will take place on Sunday, the 12th March.
It is the Minister's intention to remain in Rome for two or three days for the purpose of seeing the new Pope.
During the Minister's stay in Rome, he would like to have an opportunity of a chat with Lord Perth, for whom, as you know, he has a very high esteem. I have written to the Minister to the Vatican2 on this question, and have suggested that he get in touch with you to consult as to the best way of arranging the meeting.
The question will also arise of a visit by the Taoiseach to Signor Mussolini. Would you please also consult with the Minister to the Vatican on this matter and make the arrangements accordingly.
The Minister intends going to Zurich from Rome in order to see Dr. Vogt, and he will probably spend a day or two there. If there are any points you wish to know, or suggestions to make, please write or telegraph.
