No. 113 NAI DFA Secretary's Files A20/3

Letter from Leopold H. Kerney to Joseph P. Walshe (Dublin)
(M.10/11)

Madrid, 26 January 1940

Frank Ryan. Your 244/8B

I would suggest the desirability of making it known through the medium of the Spanish Minister in Dublin, that any action by me here on Ryan's behalf has been taken in accordance with your wishes and instructions; this would give a fresh opportunity for the Spanish Minister to report to his Government in the matter.1 There may still be a lingering doubt here as to whether my attitude is governed by personal motives; recently Casa Rojas asked me, somewhat casually, whether my talk with him about Ryan was to be taken as official; moreover, Champourcin (who has, I think, certain friendships about which I find it discreet not to enquire) makes this same suggestion to me, and I should not be surprised if he had heard some doubt expressed and which should be dispelled.
