Madrid, 10 September 1940

10.30 p.m. 'phoned Champ. re O'Reilly cable, and reply thereto; said would call next day, afternoon or evg. to discuss matters.
11.45 p.m. He 'phoned me to say had G. friend in office just as I 'phoned; that a letter was on the way to me by 'Clipper'1 written in R's peculiar style, and this would make everything clear and open in a few days' time; meanwhile better wait; Ch. had seen copy of letter.
8 p.m. Saw Ch. told him of my cable and reply to, also re N.Y. Said if I saw friend latter was instructed what to say. Told him why I cd. not approach friend direct; had not told his friends that I was seeking news, and they were puzzled at this; told him to say he had now given me information.
