No. 388 NAI DFA Secretary's Files P12/1

Code telegram from Joseph P. Walshe to Seán Murphy (Vichy)
(No. 27) (Personal)

Dublin, 7 January 1941

Your written report 3rd December received.1 Most interesting and useful. As requested in my telegram 3492 you should send similar weekly reports by telegram.

No criticism intended in our telegrams 983 and 391.4 You have evidently misunderstood our desire to know Vatican attitude. It is of course of utmost importance for us to know Vatican views at all stages of situation especially owing to character of Pétain Government. The questions in our tel. 391 were put for purpose of obtaining more detailed information on the matters treated by you and were not in any way intended as criticism of the objectivity of your reports. Questions may often be necessary in order to elucidate special points.

Chief thing to keep in mind is that very frequent reports from you are an essential factor in our day to day judgment of a situation which affects the vital interests of our own State.
