No. 62  NAI DFA Secretary's Files P12/3

Extract from a personal code telegram from William Warnock to Joseph P. Walshe (Dublin)
(No. 48)

BERLIN, 17 May 1941

Hess1 affair has astounded public. It has given rise to great curiosity, laconic official statements have only heightened interest. Home front is, however, so well organised and trust in Chancellor so complete that no political repercussion may be expected. No information forthcoming here beyond official communiqués.

Hess function concerned exclusively with party and it is said matters of high military importance were never entrusted to him.

[matter omitted]

1 Rudolf Hess (1894-1987), Deputy Führer. On 10 May 1941 Hess made an unauthorised flight to Scotland in an attempt to negotiate peace with Great Britain. He was captured and imprisoned.
