I am directed by the Minister of Industry and Commerce to refer to your minute (T/21/23) of 15th instant attaching copy of a letter of resignation received from Mr. Bewley.² I am to say that the question whether an Office is for the time being to be retained in Berlin appears to be a matter rather for the Minister of External Affairs than for the Minister of Industry and Commerce. It is felt that at the moment there would be no justification for maintaining an Office in Berlin merely for trade purposes in view of the present conditions in Germany but if on general political grounds an Office is retained in Berlin this Ministry would like to make use of it so far as possible for trade matters.
