No. 411 NAI DFA Secretary's Files A53
DUBLIN, 6 April 1944
Your telegram 135.1 It is better to avoid making any public statements about security collaboration. Have had further talk with American security in London and again suggested sending special man or men here during critical period. Your telegram 1272 shows official attitude in favour of leaving field to Gray. No government in world would leave their affairs in the hands of a frustrated old man who has been so demonstrably hostile and for above reasons. His two interviews and letter to Cardinal alone sufficient to brand him as a danger to both countries. If State Dept does not listen to security we can only conclude they do not want to hear any good about us ……………3 policy which suits Gray who wants to be the only reporter on our affairs. Gray has become a byword among ordinary people for dishonest anti-Irish exaggeration. You should not ask for his removal but you could say that he is creating an atmosphere inimical to American interests.
