On receipt of your communication No. 196,1 I made an appointment with Sir Eric Drummond and handed him your letter of application for Membership2 this afternoon.
It created immediate excitement in the Secretariat and amongst the members of the Council which is sitting at present. To say it was welcomed would scarcely describe its reception for it was considered as the most important application that has been made since the formation of the League and more so even, than if it came from Germany or Russia.
The application was forthwith made public and as there are about fifty foreign journalists here at present, in connection with the Council Meeting, there is no doubt its publicity will be widespread.
