Extract from a letter from Michael MacWhite to Hugh Kennedy (Dublin)

We have followed the work of the Commissions pretty closely and were able to intervene effectually in some of the debates. We were canvassed by all parties but we succeeded in sailing on an even keel. Canvassing for the election of Members of the Council is now in full swing but as there are many undercurrents it is as yet impossible to say who will be the winners outside of Czecho- Slovakia and Spain. The results will, however, be known before this letter reaches you.

Our independent attitude in all matters here has produced a good effect. Even our friends across the water have nothing to criticise unless it be the lack of enthusiasm we have shown towards them.
