No. 222 NAI TSCH/2/2/10

Extract from the minutes of a meeting of the Cabinet
'Schedule'
(GC 5/57) (Item 10) (S14458)

Dublin, 31 December 1948

I feel bound to make known to your Excellency the feelings of grave anxiety which the announcement of the detention of his Eminence Cardinal Mindszenty has occasioned in this country. Your Excellency will readily understand the concern of lovers of freedom everywhere for the dignity and welfare of one who always showed himself so fearless a champion of fundamental human rights. The Irish Government would greatly appreciate if the Government of Hungary would afford the necessary facilities to enable a representative designated by the Irish Government to visit his Eminence.1

1 Ambassador to the Holy See Joseph Walshe informed Dublin on 29 December 1948: 'Instructions carried out. They are very grateful; Osservatore gives full text ministers telegram and describes action as noble example of Catholic and civilised solidarity. We are first state to take action.' (NAI DFA Holy See Embassy 24/60/2A).
