No. 324 UCDA P190/822

Extract from a letter from John J. Hearne to John J. Costello (Dublin)

Washington DC, 18 December 1954

I was deeply affected by Joe Walshe's retirement. I cannot think of our foreign service without him. So long as he was in the service, at home or abroad, he was the Dean of our corps and had a place apart in our affairs. It was he who, of all others, stamped its missionary character upon our work which I hope it will never lose. Let us pray that his sojourn in South Africa will restore his health.
