Extracts from a letter from Leo T. McCauley to Seán Murphy (Dublin)
(14) (Copy)

Ottawa, 14 June 1956

I have the honour to report that Dr. Sukarno,1 President of Indonesia, has visited Ottawa where he enjoyed the privilege of addressing both Houses of the Canadian Parliament in joint session.

[matter omitted]

Later, at a reception, I had an opportunity of exchanging a few words with the President. He said that the Irish independence movement had been an inspiration for him and that he had been influenced by such Irish leaders as Terence MacSwiney2 and Arthur Griffith.3

1 Dr. Sukarno (1901-70), First President of Indonesia (1945-67).

2 Terence MacSwiney (1879-1920), Sinn Féin Lord Mayor of Cork who died on hunger strike during the War of Independence.

3 Arthur Griffith (1872-1922), journalist and politician, founder of Sinn Féin, Chairman of the Irish delegation at the Anglo-Irish Treaty negotiations in London 1921 and President of Dáil Éireann (Jan.-Aug. 1922).
