French ambassador called today to say that the French government while adhering to their view that the Algerian question was within their domestic jurisdiction would nevertheless not oppose the question being placed on agenda. They intended to ask that Algerian question be placed as low as possible on agenda of the First Committee. He stated that United States government would support this attitude. For confidential information French government attitude is influenced by hope that secret negotiations now in progress may result in the conclusion of a cease fire. Taoiseach agrees unless Minister has strong views to the contrary that French request be supported by us.
