No. 302 NAI DFA 313/3A

Dearg code telegram from the Department of External Affairs to Joseph P. Walshe (Holy See)
(No. 29)

Dublin, 20 March 1947

Your No. 114 of 30th Nov. last.1 Is any significant alteration in position indicated by Cardinal Sapieha's2 appeal to Poles abroad to return to Poland. See Irish Press of 6th March. It is difficult to see how Cardinal could make such an appeal unless he thought conditions in Poland now afford sufficient guarantees as regards practice of faith etc. We would like to regularize relations with Poland if possible both on account of UNO candidature and because recognition would open way to coal supplies.

1 Not printed, but see No. 237 above.

2 Cardinal Adam Stefan Sapieha (1867-1951), Archbishop of Kraków (1925-46).
