No. 339 NAI DFA 26/95

Letter from Timothy A. Smiddy to Joseph P. Walshe (Dublin)
(Secret and Confidential)

London, 12 February 1930

Mr. Phelan, Secretary of the Labour Bureau of the League of Nations, lunched with me to-day. In his reference to the forthcoming elections for the Council of the League, he said that he learned on good authority that the Prime Minister of Australia was not interested in putting up a candidate for the vacancy. He also stated that Sir Eric Drummond was not keen on the Dominions being represented on the Council, as, in consequence of the present condition of China, he was more in favour of China obtaining a seat on the Council.

[signed] T. A. Smiddy
High Commissioner
