Rommel's success in Africa and consequent discomfiture of British propaganda is source of great satisfaction. Rommel is most popular officer in German Army and his troops would follow him anywhere.

Russian setback at Kharkov¹ is further proof that German land troops are much superior to anything enemy can muster; only their advantage in numbers is enabling Russians to check German Army.

Air raid precautions are being improved everywhere. Foreign Office has asked diplomats not to visit scene of raids on the grounds that authorities fully occupied in rescuing operations and cannot give diplomats attention normally due to them.

Foreign Office has also requested diplomatic corps (1) not to give large receptions except on national days as German guests cannot return hospitality owing to rationing; (2) not to arrange large motoring parties; missions have been informed that their rations of meat and fats are to be reduced.
