No. 523  NAI DFA Secretary's Files A20/4

Dearg code telegram from Joseph P. Walshe to Con Cremin (Berlin)
(No. 273)

DUBLIN, 19 December 1944

Your 43.1 Have heard from Kerney Frank Ryan died 10th June this year in Berlin from pleurisy and was given Catholic burial. Can you confirm this?

You probably know Spaniards, on request of German Secret Service, allowed Ryan escape in July, 1940. We know he was in Germany for most of time prior to death. It is better for everybody that we should be able to give details of illness and death, otherwise Communists in Britain and America sure to concoct false story to explain mystery of member of International Brigade going over to Germans. Perhaps officials will be more ready to give information in new circumstances.

1 No. 43 not printed. See DIFP VI, No. 246 for the background to this document.
