Extract from the minutes of a meeting of the Cabinet
'The Republic of Ireland Act, 1948: Celebrations to mark coming into operation'
(GC 5/81) (Item 3) (S14440)

Dublin, 5 April 1949

Following consideration of a memorandum dated the 5th April, 1949,1 submitted by the Minister for External Affairs, relative to the celebrations proposed for Easter Monday, 18 April, 1949, to mark the coming into operation of The Republic of Ireland Act, 1948, approval was given generally to:

  1. the making of the arrangements outlined in paragraphs 2 to 7 of the memorandum; and
  2. the issue, by the Government Information Bureau, to Radio Éireann and to the newspapers of a preliminary announcement, as set out in the enclosure to the memorandum, subject to any verbal changes in the text of the announcement that might be decided upon by the Taoiseach.
