Eamon de Valera to Lord Justice O'Connor
(Copy)

Dublin, 4 June 1921

Dear Justice O'Connor:-

Your letter of June 2nd has been forwarded to me.1

If the sky fell we should catch larks, and such is the hope of securing the end of the struggle with England through a prior agreement with the Unionist minority.

From my interview with Sir James Craig I am convinced that nothing is to be gained by a further conference with him.2 This is at bottom an Irish-English question, and its solution must be sought in the larger general play of English interests. Carson can envisage it in that light, and knows how to solve it. I do not think however a meeting with me would in any way affect his will in the matter.

As regards meeting yourself and Mr. Cope, what would be the use.
Very sincerely yours,
Eamon de Valera
