Foreign appointments

At a meeting of the Foreign Appointments Committee held yesterday evening it was decided subject to your ratification, to appoint Colonel Maurice Moore as temporary envoy to Paris, Mr Chartres returning forthwith to Berlin. Col. Moore would be asked to go to Paris for two months only, as we do not need an Envoy in Paris in the height of the summer, and some permanent representatives should be appointed at mid-summer.

It was also decided, subject to your ratification, to appoint Mr Ambrose Griffith as assistant to Mr Esmonde in Madrid at a salary of £400 per year, with a view to testing Mr Griffith's suitability for a permanent appointment. Mr Griffith knows Spanish, French and Italian thoroughly well, and has sent in first rate testimonials as to character, ability and national outlook. He is a man of about 40 years of age and is at present engaged at Father Sweetman's school in Gorey; the committee have satisfied themselves that he is well worthy of a trial, and Mr Esmonde badly needs some-one who knows Spanish to help him. The appointment would be made to last until the end of September next, subject to renewal then if the candidate proves himself satisfactory.
