Following consideration of a memorandum dated the 28th February, 1953,1 submitted by the Minister for Justice, it was decided
- that the Minister for Justice, after consultation with the Minister for External Affairs, should submit proposals for the admission to Ireland, at the discretion of the Minister for Justice, of a limited number of refugees on the following conditions:-
- that such refugees are of good character and are vouched for by a reputable organisation or by responsible persons,
- that satisfactory guarantees of provision for their maintenance while in Ireland are furnished,
- that assurances are given that they will leave Ireland within a limited period, and
- such other conditions as the Minister for Justice may consider it proper to recommend and
- that, subject to and in accordance with whatever decisions may be taken in respect of the proposals to be submitted by the Minister for Justice, five of the Jewish refugee families of Hungarian or Czech origin who are recently arrived in Austria and who are referred to in the memorandum should be permitted to enter Ireland as refugees for a maximum period of two years.
