No. 548  NAI DFA Secretary's Files P78

Extract from a letter from Joseph P. Walshe to David Gray (Dublin)
(Secret)

DUBLIN, 28 February 1945

[Matter omitted]

We have now heard from our Legation in Paris about the report in 'France Soir ' of the 11/12 February that two 'Nazi Chiefs' have taken refuge in Ireland. The report, which does not seem to have appeared in any other French paper, has all the appearance of a canard based on Lord Vansittart's1 recent statement in the House of Lords. Our police authorities are satisfied that there is nothing in it. They are, of course, continually on the alert to prevent illegal entries into the country.

1 Lord Robert Vansittart, Permanent Under-Secretary, Foreign Office (1930-7), Chief Diplomatic Adviser (1938-41).
